Purpose

The purpose is not to train new police officers or firefighters.  Our purpose is to give the public an opportunity to see how Hampden Public Safety works within its policies and procedures.  Classes will be led by several different public safety staff members to allow for different perspectives as to how an individual performs his/her duties.

There are many misconceptions about public safety, some of which have been created by television and other forms of media.  We hope to give the public a true perspective, doing away with some of the negative connotations associated with police work and public safety in general.  A greater understanding will create a stronger relationship with the public.

What will we learn?

The Academy will consist of topics such as:

  • Patrol Procedures
  • Evidence Collection
  • Drug Investigations
  • Taser Operation
  • Search and Seizure
  • Maine Laws
  • Communications
  • Use of Force
  • EMS Protocols
  • Fire Extinguisher Training
  • Pumper Demonstrations

There will be tours of the Penobscot County Jail and the Penobscot Regional Communications Center.
